Chevy Chevelle History

Eddie asked:

The Chevrolet Chevelle is a mid-sized car from Chevy, first rolling off the assembly line in 1964. It was manufactured from 1964 through 1977 and was one of General Motors most triumphant cars. Chevelle models ranged from easy on the pocket family cars to convertibles and powerful coupes. The Malibu was at first the top trim level of the Chevelle line, and it replaced the Chevelle name entirely after 1977. The Chevelle chassis, based on the reengineered GM A platform, provided the platform for the Chevrolet Monte Carlo, a very successful model itself.

The Chevelle was anticipated to compete with the equally sized Ford Fairlane, and to return to the Chevrolet lineup a model comparable in size and concept to the popular 1955-57 models. Early drawing photos show what would eventually be the Chevelle wearing Nova nameplates, the name that was used for the top trim level in the smaller Chevy II series. From 1964-69, the Chevelle was the groundwork for the similar Beaumont, a re-trimmed model sold only in Canada by Pontiac dealers.

A two-door station wagon was available in 1964 and 1965 in the bottom-line Chevelle 300 series. Four-door hardtops, dubbed Sport Sedans, were available from 1966 through 1972. Two-door hardtops and convertibles were produced from 1964 to 1972, while four-door sedans and four-door wagons were offered throughout the entire run. In line with other Chevrolet series, the two-door hardtops were called Sport Coupes. An assortment of models of wagons was sold with exclusive nameplates: Nomad (1968-1972), Nomad Custom (1968), Greenbrier (1969-1972), Concours (1967-1972), and Concours Estate (1968-1972).

The El Camino, a utility pickup, was part of the Chevy lineup and, depending on the year, was available in the 300/300 Deluxe trim level, Malibu trim level and the one-year only SS396. The El Camino outlived its passenger car counterpart until its end in 1987.

The Chevelle underwent a redesign for the 1973 model year. The so-called “colonnade hardtop” styling featured frameless door glass and fixed “B” pillars. Rear windows on coupes no longer could be opened, no doubt encouragement from GM to purchase the increasingly popular optional air conditioning. The Front suspension was based on the Camaro and Firebird which greatly improved handling. Engine choices ranged from the 250 I6 to the venerable 454 V8. Hardened engine valve seats and hydraulic camshafts made these engines reliable for many miles, and allowed them to accept the increasingly popular unleaded regular gasoline. Cross flow radiators and coolant reservoirs that prevented air from entering the system prevented overheating. Swivel bucket seats and center console for automatic and manual shift cars were offered in every model as was the instrument gauge cluster. Power front disc and rear drum brakes were standard. Power accessories, air conditioning and AM/FM tape stereo were more prevalent these years and provided a pleasing drive. A power moon roof was an option in 1973 and 1975.

The station wagon, available in 6 or 9 passenger seating, featured a rear hatchback door which allowed for easier entry and loading. The Chevrolet El Camino and GMC Sprint were based on the Chevelle. Yearly design changes to the front and rear mark the aesthetic differences as in preceding years. The 1973 to 1977 Chevelles were top sellers for GM as was the Oldsmobile Cutlass, which used the same A-body platform.

The 1973 model offerings started with the top luxury Laguna series with its distinct urethane nose, followed by Malibu and then deluxe models. A Super Sport SS package was available for Malibu coupes and for the only time, station wagons. The Super Sport SS option included a black front grille, SS emblem on the interior and exterior, body side striping, rally wheels with white letter tires, F41 sport suspension with front and rear sway bars, and a 350 or 454 V8. A 4 speed Muncie transmission was available with 350 or 454 equipped cars on any model.

In 1974 the Laguna S3 coupe replaced the “Super Sport SS” as the sporty performance option on the Chevelle. The nomenclature S3 referred to sport and 3rd generation Chevelle. It sported a special urethane nose, body side striping, Laguna S3 emblem, rally wheels, 4 spoke steering wheel and F41 sport suspension with front and rear sway bars. Radial tires on 15″ wheels and radial tuned suspension provided road grip and retractable 3 point seat belts were introduced and still used in new cars today. A 400 engine was new this year. The 454 was the top engine and available with the Turbo Hydra-Matic 400 or Muncie 4 speed transmissions.

With the Laguna nameplate now bearing the sporty model in the Chevelle line, the top-line series for 1974 became the Malibu Classic, offered in sedan, coupe and station wagon models. Unlike the ‘73 Laguna, the Malibu Classic used the same grille work as lesser Chevelle models but added a spring-loaded hood ornament. Inside, Malibu Classic featured luxurious interiors with notchback bench seats (or optional Strato bucket seats) upholstered in cloth or vinyl, carpeted door panels and wood grain instrument panel trim, and vertical opera windows on coupes or exterior wood trim on station wagons. Also for 1974, the base Chevelle Deluxe series was dropped, leaving the plain Malibu as the low-end series.

The 1975 Laguna S-3 debuted as a 1/2 year model in February and sported a new sloped front nose designed for NASCAR. H.E.I. or High Energy Ignition provided spark to the spark plugs with minimal maintenance and increased power. The larger distributor cap also provided better high RPM performance by decreasing the likelihood of the spark conducting to the wrong terminal. The 454 and Turbo Hydra-Matic 400 transmissions was available for the first half of the model year and then the 400 was the top engine choice. In 1976, the Chevelle was available with the new 5.0 liter 305 V8 the 350 and the 400. 1977 offered the Malibu Classic as the top model and the 350 was the top engine. A Chevelle S.E. or special edition was available and provided front and rear spoilers, rally wheels, special graphics and sport suspension. Only 50 or so were built. When GM downsized its intermediate models for 1978, the Chevelle name was dropped and all models took the Chevrolet Malibu name.

The 1973 to 1977 Chevelle was the top car in the NASCAR circuit in the 1970s. The car was so popular and successful on the track that Chevrolet developed a new front nose in 1975 that lead to the aerodynamic cars of today. The car dominated the field so much that NASCAR imposed a carburetor restrictor plate for all Laguna’s. Drivers that raced 1973 to 1977 Chevelles include Darrell Waltrip, Junior Johnson, Benny Parsons, Cale Yarborough, Bobby and Donnie Allison, Bobby Isaac, Lennie Pond, A.J. Foyt, Ricky Rudd, Dale Earnhardt and female racer Janet Guthrie.

How expensive is it to replace a Camaro Power Window Motor?

June 13th, 2009

David P asked:

Does anyone have any idea of how much it would cost to have the driver’s side power window motor replaced on a 2000 Camaro? I have replaced the switch and checked the wiring. Once in a while it will move a few inches, but then takes forever to get it back up. Any hints?

Don’t Get Distracted!

June 6th, 2009
camaro
Cheryl Petersen asked:

Wow, she is gorgeous. Blond, comfortable, fun looking. And, driving a 69 Camaro! I love the paint job; a creamy rich yellow, with a wide black strip across the top. Gotta be custom. Is it a Z28?

WHAM.

The gawker rear-ended the good-looking Camaro.

The back window of the Camaro shattered and fell out. The driver pulled over, turned off the car, and got out. So did the gawking, now dumbfounded, guy who hit her. They were 20 feet from a busy 4 way intersection in downtown Kennewick, Washington. Other drivers reduced their speed to get around the mess. People were admiring or shaking their heads at the folly. Curious pedestrians began crowding around, habitually lured to any spectacle.

The gorgeous blond held her ground. She knew this affair was going to be dealt with quickly and correctly. Although completely aware of the man’s inanity, she purged her mind of blame. Human beings get distracted. She did not need to add to the distracted milieu by finding fault. She blocked out the mounting interference coming from the crowd and made an effort to look past the stir.

The police were called. It was hot outside. Hot. The gorgeous blond did not react to the heat or the man’s rambling. Yes, his car’s front end was bashed in real good by the heavy weighted Camaro, but that was not a point at the moment. She began an orderly process of making sure they stood where it was safe and they exchanged information. The police came, followed up on the business and they all dispersed.

Quite often situations come up that demand our immediate and concentrated effort. And, if we don’t give spiritual attention, the situation lingers or worsens. The circumstance can be a child’s escalating tantrum, a frantic co-worker, or an attacked body. However, as the mind systematically stays uninterrupted by surface perceptions, a person can manifest perpetual forward movement. A mess can dissolve with impeccable thought, untainted by self-will, timidity, or resentment. From 21st Century Science and Health, “Thought is attracted toward Soul and as a result, superficial perceptions and the body do not become distractions.”

Anytime people get attracted to surface perceptions, they really are being distracted away from Soul, our source of nonstop progressive expression. The distraction away from Soul causes mental blocks to be felt. Or, embarrassing situations can be created. This is needless however, because there is a force that strikes our human beingness with the power to look further, deeper, and see a decent outcome. I call the force, Christ.

There is no question that the human mind can be befuddled or punch-drunk for no apparent reason. Therefore, Jesus constantly brought attention to our ability to connect with the Christ-spirit. Once, when a large hungry crowd was coming toward him, Christ Jesus asked Philip where they should buy bread to feed the crowd. “He said this to test him, for he himself knew what he was going to do.” (John 6::6, NRSV) Philip went into brain-freeze mode. He began rambling on about how many months it would take someone to work at a job to pay for the food necessary to feed the crowd.

But Peter, standing alongside, was a bit more savvy (or in other words, a bit less distracted by human scheming and numbers), looked at what they did have, instead of what they didn’t have, and found some bread and two fish. Yet Peter, although willing to rely on ontological realism, still fell back on his calculations by running some comparisons. He measured the people, then the food, and confessed the small amount of food could not feed so many people.

Then there was Christ, fully realized by Jesus who knew spiritual food was endless.

Christ Jesus held his ground. He demanded order. The crowd was told to sit. Undistracted by the inane, the doubtful, the contrasting and comparing, Jesus gave thanks. The food increased exponentially as it was shared. Everyone ate and they had leftovers.

The goal to manifest a clear ordered thought process is possible. As we know Soul, the spirit of humanity is exalted by the Christ-spirit, consequently we are receptive to regroup immediately after a disruption. Christ—one with Soul and its unending supply of credible ideas—then melds our being with the perpetual movement forward. When thought is on God, there are no distracted thoughts.

Concept Cars and Cars to Come

June 2nd, 2009
camaro
Ethan Williams asked:

Concept cars are prototypes of ideal cars. They are usually showcased for public exhibition. In the fiercely competitive world of car manufacturing, manufacturers are constantly designing and making special cars to show their ability to design and manufacture highly useful cars, built ahead of the times. As the name goes, such cars are purely conceptual in nature.

Why are concept cars conceptual?

Manufacturers of such cars do not go for mass production. This is because prototype cars are non-traditional and are made of very expensive materials or materials like paper or carbon fiber, mass production of which is not feasible. The designs and layouts of such cars are too fanciful to be implemented practically.

Purpose of designing concept cars:

Concept cars are made combining the best of modern technology with the highly effective and time-tested layouts of cars from the past. Reactions to such cars enable automobile companies feel the pulse of the market. The fanciness of the cars set the pace for future designs. Manufacturers come to know whether a car is acceptable or requires a few modifications before going to production. Cars which evince little interest are usually destroyed. Those which catch the imagination of the public are preserved as a strategy to expand the list of company patents.

Toyota Motor Corp. showcased 7 Toyota concept cars at the 39th Tokyo Motor Show. The cars unveiled by the company feature several groundbreaking and futuristic technologies. Among the concept cars showcased are the Fine-X and i-swing. While the former is a personal mobility vehicle the latter is a brand new fuel cell hybrid vehicle. The company has also showcased a prototype car, which has headlights that change intensity of light from dull to bright. The change in color reflects feeling of the driver, whether is happy, sad, or angry.

Among the 2009 concept cars Vision GLK Bluetec, the GLK compact crossover and Vision GLK Freeside are expected to be popular among the mass. Cheverolet will be launching the Chevrolet Camaro Convertile. Audi will introduce six new models in next three years. Audi Q7 SUV is the first of the six models. Audi r8 will make debut later this year. Other models are Audi A4, Audi A5, and Audi Q5. The last of the models which is shrouded in mystery is likely to be out after 2 years. To make its aging models come off age, Jaguar’s S type line-up is being replaced by Jaguar XF in 2009.

Modern Day Cars, Perhaps Future Classics

June 1st, 2009
camaro
Levi Quinn asked:

It’s anyone’s guess really as to which vehicles of today will become the classics of tomorrow. However, there are many factors that make it easy to make predictions. Many of the modern day cars currently on the road will not end up anywhere down the line but in the junkyard. But a handful of them will end up classics that are worth plenty when they are several decades old. If you’re not sure if your car will be a classic, there are a few sources you can check to see what the pros think.

There is no way of knowing for certain which cars will turn out to be classics. A variety of factors play a role in determining this. The CEO of a large insurance company known as Hagerty’s Insurance has put together his own list of vehicles he thinks may be classics. The Hagerty list may not match anyone else’s but it is based on observations made inside the insurance industry.

There are a number of cars on the Hagerty list but some of them clearly stand out more than others. Some of these cars include the Cadillac XLR-V Roadster as well as Audi S5. Some people might be shocked to find that the Smart car is on this list as possible classics as well. It may not seem like the type to be a classic but some people said that about the Beetle once. The modern day Dodge Charger Super Bee also makes the list of future classics which is only fitting considering its predecessor models.

The classic car predictions tend to vary in places like the United Kingdom when compared to the United States. Their list includes such cars as the Volkswagen Corrado as well as many others that are not common in the U.S. and may be rather unheard of to most people.

In the past few years a few large car manufacturers have re-launched some of their beloved models of the past with a new look for the modern day. Muscle cars are leading the way in this area. From Mustangs to the new Camaros and Chargers, this classic car type is coming back from the past to set the standard for the future. These are ones to watch for sure, especially limited higher end models.

Like the muscle cars, there are other cars from the past that have been redone for the modern day. The Volkswagen Beetle and the Mini Cooper are timeless classics that are also available now. These new models may very well carry on the classic status from the past.

Of course, it’s important to remember that even professionals can’t always predict what will happen in the future. It’s wise not to try to purchase a certain car only because you think it will be a classic. You should buy the car that you like because if it’s only based on money you stand to lose a lot down the line. And of course remember that having a classic car has a lot to do with how you treat and maintain it.

Qatar Classic Cars, a Classic Love

May 27th, 2009
camaro
khalid r mustaffa asked:

Classic car lovers in Doha the capital of Qatar are willing to face the bumps to go after their passion. Classic, Antique or some may call vintage cars until very recently appeared to be a territory only the rich royalties and the VIPs are allowed to enter. However, this perception has gradually changed, and now the market holds possibilities for even the enthusiasts that are willing to spare a bit over a hundred-thousand Qatari Riyals the equivalent to twenty-thousands US Dollars. This became possible due to the economic boom the area is witnessing, efficient communications with classic car dealers in Houston, along with the superior supply chain management allowed cars in Houston to be transported at low costs.

It now became possible for a knowledgeable enthusiast, with patience, and time at their disposal to buy classic car in Qatar, or an antique car in Dubai, or even a classic car to be shipped from Houston. It became possible to start the process with the equivalent of three thousand US dollars, or in other words for less than the ca was worth in the seventies or eighties.

This however sometimes holds true, and sometimes does not. For instance, Morris Minors was valued in Dubai and Qatar at about QR 15,000 in the eighties. It is very difficult to sell such a car for QR 10,000 in 2007 according to a car dealer. Cars that were easy on the pocket back in their peaking days are unlikely to hold value over the years. Hence, exceptions always pop up, for instance this fact doesn’t hold true with the iconic mini.

I respect, and always reflect my articles with both mine and the apposing; however I do not see a Qatar classic car dealer’s opinion holding true. He said “The classic car market, if it can be called that, will flourish because people have bought [these cars] for nostalgia and recreation — not for financial gain,” says a dealer in classic cars. “Most people, who have bought a classic car in the last ten years, knew their cars would have seen a rise on the value.” To contradict, According to Classic Car magazine, the US has seen a growth in the market for classic cars, particularly American sports cars of the 1960s and 1970s. Cars, such as Chevrolet Corvettes and Camaros, Ford Thunderbirds and Pontiacs, are said to have doubled in value over the past three years.

As I have been promising throughout the article series dedicated to Qatar classic car, the research journey has not stopped, rather the more research I make, the more I am interested to learn about the differences in tastes and markets. To get up-to-date research results, visit the section I dedicated to Qatar classic cars

Are You an Avid Collector? Auto Auctions and Auctions for yourself

May 13th, 2009
camaro
Manita PD asked:

How to Start Bidding for Online Auctions

Auctions have been around for many years and even before supermarkets and stores, one of the most popular means of getting rid of items was to auction them off to the highest bidder. Today, the popularity of auctions is increasing once again with the climbing interest rates and the accessibility to auctions via the internet.

There are tons of auction sites online that offer anything and everything you can imagine, from automotive parts and cards to jewelry and dolls. When you are looking for the most popular categories online you will find that clothing, furniture and appliances rank highly as do cars and auto parts. People are constantly looking for a good deal on Urban Outfitters or Abercrombie and Fitch apparel and no mechanic can pass up a good bargain on a Corvette water pump.

At various auctions sites you can get items like Stihl chainsaws, Air Compressor Miata window, Urban outfitters, Abercrombie Forever 21, Crusader, Abercrombie and Fitch, Flstn, Accel distributor, Carvin, Corvette water pump, Small block chevy intake manifold, Unimog, Axo, Bose radio, Mopar intake manifold, Snap on pliers, Camaro cd, and Vortec engines Astatic for really cheap prices. They will not only be cheap because of the nature of the auction, but obviously many of the items will be second hand. This does not mean that they will be in terrible conditions, but you will have to make sure there is nothing wrong with any items before you place a bid on it.

Bidding on the popular online auction categories can be hard because there are so many other people eyeing the same thing you are and sometimes with the popularity of an item, the price can actually go higher than expected and sometimes higher than it is worth. This is why if you are going to start bidding on that Bose Radio, you must learn how to bid carefully and strategically so that you can win the item at a good price. One of the first things you should do is set aside a certain amount that you will spend as your budget and do not deviate from it at all. The nature of the game is that you will win some and lose some, but it is also that there will always be lots of items that people are auctioning off that you can get next time. When you start bidding, look to see if there is a reserve on the item. If there is, then it usually means that the item is going for a higher price and the owner wants to make sure that this price is met.

When you start bidding, try to only start your bidding towards the end of the auction. Keep an eye on it and watch until you get down to the last minute or so. There will usually be a count down timer so you can see every second and then right at the last possible moment you can place your bid. Some auctions will restart from 1 minute again so ensure that everyone has a fair chance, but most will simply end, giving you the advantage if you bid very late. It also ensures that you don’t push the price up unnecessarily by going up against another bidder.
