What does the shifter cable do on a 95 Camaro, should I replace it?

I have a 95 Camaro, my dad ended up having to break up the whole shifter rig. He replaced every think but this little cable. I fired it up one day, and (forgetting about the cable) i drove it around the block. It didn’t seem to change anything(but i didn’t go far), can someone please explain this cable, and tell me if i should worry about it?
It still shifts find, and im thinking that its the detent cable

      The neutral also be shifted without turning the neutral also make sure its cable could be started in park or neutral also make sure its cable and not wire.
